LACOE’s Homeless Education and Foster Youth Services Programs will be hosting their eight in-person Homeless and Foster Symposium on Thursday, October 15, 2026.  This all-day interactive workshop will cover the essentials in order to assist homeless and foster youth liaisons working in districts and charter schools throughout the county, while also serving as a learning platform for any agencies or service providers that support students experiencing homelessness or students in foster care.  Participants will be able to immediately apply the information as they work through real case scenarios.  School and district level staff who would benefit most from this Symposium are homeless and foster youth liaisons, front office personnel, principals, assistant principals, deans, counselors, and new site and district administrators. Other staff that would benefit from this training would include Social Workers, Counselors, DCFS Staff, Probation, Advocates, and CASA’s.

Topics will include:

  • Homeless and foster youth liaison basics including identification, educational responsibilities, school placement, attendance, transportation, student records, equal access, and much more
  • Federal and state laws, legislative changes, the impact on service, and promising practices
  • Transportation
  • Data and documentation
  • LCAP alignment
  • LCFF and funding concerns
  • Access to early education services
  • Transition age youth and access to college
  • Community collaboration
  • and more…
