What is Registered Apprenticeship?

Registered Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience with a mentor and receive progressive wage increases; classroom instruction; and a portable, nationally recognized credential. Registered Apprenticeships are industry-vetted and are approved and validated by the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards and U.S. Department of Labor.

A Registered Apprenticeship is different from other types of workplace training programs in several ways:

  • Industry Led – Programs are industry-vetted and approved to ensure alignment with industry standards and that apprentices are trained for highly skilled, high-demand occupations.
  • Paid Job – Registered Apprenticeships are jobs! Apprentices earn progressive wages as their skills and productivity increase.
  • Structured On-the-Job Training – Programs provide structured on-the-job training to prepare for a successful career, which includes instruction from an experienced mentor.
  • Related Supplemental Instruction – Apprentices are provided tuition-free supplemental classroom education based on the employers’ unique training needs to ensure quality and success.
  • State and National Credentials – Apprentices earn a portable, state and nationally recognized credential within their industry.

Flexibility is a hallmark of apprenticeships, the length of a Registered Apprenticeship program can vary depending on the complexity of the occupation, employer, industry, and the type of program.
